Abstract:
Knowledge informs the public on measures they can take to avoid becoming infected with the deadly disease such as abstinence, being faithful to one sexual partner or using condoms. To reduce the transmission of HIV/AIDS, the Ministry of Health in Kenya has undertaken various programs and activities in conjunction with County Governments to manage the epidemic, since Kenya has the fourth-largest number of people living with HIV/AIDS after Mozambique and Uganda. These activities aim to reduce transmission, educate people at the workplace and schools, encourage people to visit the Voluntary Counselling and Testing centers for testing and counselling, and mostly educate people how to avoid becoming infected with HIV/AIDS. Besides implementing relevant policies, the Health Ministry has also partnered with various local and international institutions to manage HIV/AIDS. This research proposal aims to examine the effect of level of awareness among students in institutions of higher learning in Narok North sub-county on the spread of HIV/AIDS among them, to determine the effect of income level among students in institutions of higher learning in Narok North on the spread of HIV/AIDS among them and to assess the extent to which student’s exposure affects the spread of HIV/AIDS among students in Narok North sub-county. The study will use both systematic sampling and simple random sampling methods. The researcher administered 130 questionnaires to university and college students for data collection. 13 questionnaires were not returned. The target population is 9,000 students from Maasai Mara University and 700 students from Narok Teachers Training College located in Narok North sub-county. A sample equivalent to 10 percent of the population will be selected. The sample population is 60 fourth year students from the School of Arts and Social Sciences, Maasai Mara University and 70 students from Narok Teachers Training College. Questionnaires will be projected in the proposal to assist in the collection of accurate data. The study will benefit the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health and the Narok County Government to set up measures to fight the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
