Effects Of Female Genital Mutilation On Girl Child Education In Ntulele Location, Narok County.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to find out how female genital mutilation (FGM) also known as female circumcision the girl child and women in accessing formal schooling in Ntulele location, Narok county. The objectives of this study included; the need determine the causes of female genital mutilation practices in Ntulele location, to determine the commonly type of female genital mutilation and its effects on girl child and women access to formal schooling and to determine mitigating strategies to curb female genital mutilation in the area. In this research, questionnaires were used as the main tool of data collection as it was administered to the respondents while in a few cases where the respondents could not possibly handle the questionnaires on their own, interview schedules were used. Probability sampling was used where the villages were used as strata and then in each stratum random sampling was used to arrive at the final study sample. The analytic technique for this research was narrative analysis for the qualitative data and descriptive statistics for the quantitative data. The findings of this research are considered significant to all stakeholders who include the girls, women, religious leaders, school heads, non-governmental organizations and the government as well in ensuring that they have first hand information on the matter at hand and therefore will be easier to facilitate resolution finding towards a better society. The major limitations in this research included; lack of openness in some of the respondents due to the sensitive nature of the topic in question. Some of the respondents were also not very literate hence making it difficult to gather much information from them.
