dc.description.abstract ABSTRACT The purpose of this research is to identify key waste disposal and pollution policies and to find out key actors in waste disposal and pollution prevention policies. The research also purposes to identify the nature of administrative process in waste disposal and pollution policy implementation and finally establish challenges and possible solutions of waste disposal and pollution prevention policies in Makueni County. This study gives a description of the location of study. It also discusses the details regarding the sources of data and instruments used, sample frame and sampling method, methods of collecting data and methods of analyzing data. The instruments for collecting data used in this research included questionnaires and interview scheduling. This data is later on analyzed using descriptive analysis. It was found out that the key environmental policies were: the regulations that prohibit the waste generators from disposing anywhere except in the designated places given by municipality, transportation of waste from point of generation to disposal site, licensing and monitoring of waste transporters in order to address environmental and health impacts of waste management. Also under Makueni regulations, the disposal sites are required to operate in environmentally sound conditions. It was also found out that there are several actors in waste disposal and pollution policy implementation in Makueni County which include: Legislature, Judiciary, Community Based Organizations, Ministry of Environment, Water and Natural Resource and also Relevant State Corporations like NEMA. In conclusion, the following solutions to the problems facing waste disposal and pollution policies in Makueni County should be taken into consideration: provide large bins for all the residential areas and collection should be made compulsory, educate masses on the need to dispose solid waste and any other wastes carefully and lastly attempts should be made privatize solid waste collection and disposal with the Makueni Municipal Council providing and managing the landfill sites. en_US
