Abstract:
This study tries to provide improved understanding of the issues relating to factors perpetuating the practice of female genital mutilation in Mosiro, Narok County. The main purpose of the study is to identify factors perpetuating the practice of female genital mutilation in Mosiro, Narok County. The study was guided by the following research objectives: To establish the local community`s perception of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM); To explore the initiatives taken by the local community to abolish the practice; To determine the impact of Female Genital Mutilation in Mosiro, Narok County. The research design was a descriptive survey method. The target population of this study consisted of 700 respondents from 20 households in Mosiro, Narok County. A sample of 50 respondents was picked using simple stratified random sampling techniques from 20 households in Mosiro, Narok County. In executing this study, both qualitative and quantitative methods were used. Qualitative method was used included individual interviews and questionnaires. The study found out that, Women were only respected after undergoing FGM. The women and girls are the ones affected by this practice. A woman is considered mature, obedient and aware of her role in the family and society if they undergo the practice. It is recommended that the local leaders together with other stakeholders should fight for women and girls’ rights through participatory/advocacy for education-in-culture. The study concludes that the practice of FGM is a social consequence that is affecting a number of women and young girls socially, economically, psychological and physically. More sensitization and campaigns needs to be done in order to curb the harmful practice of Female Genital Mutilation. The issues dealing with culture are very sensitive and therefore there is need for the diverse study of cultures to avoid generalizing these cultures. The study recommends that the local leaders, the government together with other stakeholders should work together in trying to have a Community free of female Genital Mutilation through participatory and advocacy for education in traditional practices relating to culture.
