Factors affecting the performance of micro and small enterprises in Kenya : A Case of SMES in Narok Town

Abstract

This study sought to explain the factors affecting the performance of small and micro enterprises in Narok town. The purpose of this study was to examine whether gender related factors influence small scale business performance in Narok town. The literature provided an insight into the various, variable on factors influencing business performance among the male and female entrepreneurs and ones that are relevant to Kenyan situation were tested among the business owners in the informal sector. The study used a descriptive survey design. The target population of this study was the entrepreneurs operating in Narok town under the informal sector. A sample of fifty(50) small-scale businesses that have operated for more than three years in various sectors that are being run by both men and women entrepreneurs was selected randomly from entire population of enterprises in Narok town. Structured questionnaires was designed and used to collect the data from respondents. The data was analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively where means and percentages were computed and the data was presented using percentages, frequency tables and charts the results of the study.
