Abstract

ABSTRACT For many years the major concern in this area of research in Kenya was to determine the prevalence and effects of alcohol and other drugs on selected populations. The problem of drug abuse by university students is multifaceted and may differ from one context to another. For instance, some students who abuse drugs and alcohol may face school failure while others may engage themselves in criminal activities. It is for this reason that the negative effects of drugs and alcohol on an individual ‘s health and overall well-being may not be ignored because sooner or later the abuser may suffer from drug and alcohol dependence by using excessively just to satisfy the unusual craving or to run away from the effects of withdrawing. Drug abuse can take away from the users the power to reason clearly, to feel honest and to boldly meet the challenges and opportunities the world has to offer. The negative effects of drug abuse experienced by society is a multifaceted phenomenon which differ from time to time, society to society, from one age group to another and from one individual to another. The primary objective of the study is to determine effects of drug abuse among university students, a second group of respondents, which will include their lecturers, will be introduced to participate in the study. It is my hope that the responses given by students and staff will shed light on the role factors such as personal factors, interpersonal factors and environmental factors play in promoting drug abuse among university students
