The purpose of this study was to explore factors contributing to moral decay among students in public institutions of higher learning in Narok County. The specific objectives of this study were; to determine whether social factors contribute to moral decay of students, to investigate whether institutional factors influence moral decay of students, to determine whether demographic factors contribute to student moral decay and to analyse whether economic factors influence moral decay of students of public institutions of higher learning in Narok County. The study will be of great significance as the study on moral decay is the key for improvement in the quality of life of the students. The knowledge acquired from this study will ultimately facilitate the understanding of pattern of causes of moral decay among the students in Narok North County.
The study used a descriptive research design, where the target population was 30 respondents. Questionnaire was the main instrument used to collect data and data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and presented using frequency tables, pie charts and percentages. The findings revealed that Stigma of illegitimacy, Substance abuse and Family structures are the highest social contributors to moral decay. It was revealed that lax enforcement, inadequate recreational facilities and Student’s social circles are the highest institutional contributors to moral decay of students. It was revealed that gender and sex habits are the higher demographic contributors of moral decay of students and also from the study it was revealed that higher income status, occupation misfit are the highest economic contributors of moral decay of students. The study recommends that there is need to train more higher institution’s and college peer counsellors to complement the existing counsellors in providing counselling to the students on the factors in question in regard to moral decentness. |
