Abstract:
Although a number of studies have been conducted on selected factors affecting enrolment of girls in various schools in Kenya, no specific study will investigate selected factors affecting enrollment of the girl-child in ECD centers and particularly in Narok County. This study therefore will seek to explore the selected factors influencing enrolment of girls in ECDE centers in Oloropil Zone of Narok County. The study will be based on the following objectives: to determine the effect of cultural factors on girls enrolment rate in ECDE centers in Oloropil zone, to examine whether distance between ECD centers and home affect the enrolment of girl–child and to assess the effect of school based factors on the enrolment of the girl child in the ECD centers. The study will be guided by Classical Liberal Theory of equal opportunity, which states that the education system should be designed so as to remove barriers of any nature. This study adopted descriptive survey design. The total population for the study will be all the 104 ECD teachers and managers from the 26 Centre and 520 parents. The study will sample twenty percent of the total population from the 26 ECDE centers; using census method this gave a total sample of 208 respondents. The tools to be used will be; questionnaires and interview guide. The supervisors will scrutinize the instruments and made relevant amendments. The data will be analyzed using frequencies and percentages and will be presented using tables, figures, charts and graphs. The study will be of great importance to the community because it will help the stakeholders in education and especially the government to come up with measures and strategies that will help enrolment more girls in ECDE centres. There shall be need to help improve on the enrolment of the girl child in ECDE, more so as the country focuses on achieving Kenya Vision 2030, having a globally competitive quality education, training and sustainable development.
